So, you are excited about your trip to Grand Bahama Island, but maybe a little nervous as well. Below is somethings to think about. We suggest making a “TO DO” list for items that relate to your trip. This is just a friendly reminder and list. Of course, you should contact the appropriate departments to confirm accurate information before your trip.
• Hotel business cards: If you are spending time in a hotel, whether in the U.S. or on the island, grab a business card from the front desk so if you ever get lost, you’ll have the name and address of the hotel in the local language.
• The six-month passport rule: The expiration date on your passport is deceiving. In the U.S., you can use your passport up to the date listed inside the cover (as of this posting). However, many other countries have been known to deny travelers entry if the passport expires in under six months. That’s because they want to ensure you have a valid passport to get back to the United States in case of travel snafus and unexpected issues. You should always renew your passport nine months before the actual expiration date.
• Credit cards: Most places on GBI accept credit cards, much like in the U.S. Not all places and people do, though. So, also bring cash.
• Fraud alerts. Let your credit card company’s fraud department know the country you’ll be visiting and when. This will prevent them from thinking your card was stolen.
• Medicine: Always carry an eye mask and earplugs in your medicine bag, along with pain relievers, antacids, prescriptions, contact lenses and solution, etc. You may not come across a 24-hour pharmacy like you see on every other block in the U.S. Fill your prescriptions before you go.
• Travel alerts: Check the State Department’s and or The Bahamas Government for travel warnings and alerts, and always print out the address and contact information of the local embassy.
• Charges and Adapters: The outlets on the island work just as in the U.S. If sailing on a cruise ship, outlets are often limited. So, having a multi-outlet short extension cord can be convenient.
• Data roaming: To avoid international data roaming, contact your cellular provider before your trip. Most providers have inexpensive international roaming plans. It is very important, though, that you are clear on the plan. The best way to communicate on the island is through WHATSAPP. Download the app before your trip.
• Currency: One Bahamian Dollar equals One U.S. Dollar. The U.S. dollar is accepted everywhere on the island. Be sure that you convert any Bahamian money back to your home currency before leaving.
• Language learning: No need… The Bahamas is an English speaking country.
